ANTHONY LOBELLO was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida. At the age of 7 months he learned how to walk. At 12 months he learned how to run. By seven years old he was hooked on in-line speed skating. At his first competition he met two-time Olympian Derek Parra and the renowned brothers Dante and Tony Muse. Later in his travels he had the good fortune of learning from the likes of 2006 Gold Medalist in the 5000m Chad Hedrick and 11-time World Champion Speed Skater Derek Downing.
Following Derek Parra's advice, Anthony made the decision to transition from in-line to ice so he could represent the United States at the Olympic Games. In 2002 he made the move and a few short years later he was skating alongside Apolo Ohno at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy.
As you can imagine living an Olympic dream takes a lot of work, discipline, dedication, and hard training (lots of it too). Anthony has had the good fortune of training at the Olympic Center in Salt Lake City and is currently at the U.S. Olympic Education Center where he trains and attends college at Northern Michigan University. He is due to graduate in 2012.
As the U.S. Olympic Committee likes to say - "Olympians don't just happen, they are created." Training at an U.S. Olympic facility is an all-compassing experience designed to make the most of every moment of an athlete's day. But Olympic-aspiring athletes cannot do it alone. It requires the financial support of the family, friends, and most important - their community.
Local communities long have come through for their hometown heroes. When a Champaign, Illinois, speed skater needed to train in Europe to have a chance at making the U.S. team, the local Policeman’s Benevolent Association raised the money she needed. That skater, Bonnie Blair, would compete for the United States in four Olympics, winning five gold medals. Therefore, your support is critical and through the Go for Gold Lobello program we hope to raise enough funding to provide Anthony the financial support to train and travel to competitions in the U.S. and abroad. Your support will also help Anthony qualify for his second Olympic Games. Our goal is to help this young man get there -- Destination Sochi 2014!
